PENCOM Partners with Urban Compassion Project to Combat Illegal Dumping in Oakland
PENCOM, a leading supplier of engineered fasteners and components, proudly partnered with Urban Compassion Project (UCP) to support an emergency cleanup effort in Oakland, California, that removed more than 65 tons of illegally dumped waste in a single day.
The cleanup, which took place at 26th and Peralta on September 4th, responded to a dangerous, smoldering pile of debris—eight feet high and emitting toxic fumes—that posed an urgent threat to nearby residents, children, and passersby. Led by Urban Compassion Project founder Vincent Ray Williams, the operation began late Monday night when he started clearing the site alone. By Tuesday, more than 15 volunteers had joined forces to confront the hazard.
PENCOM stepped in as a key sponsor, funding half of the cleanup costs. Without this critical support, the rapid response would not have been possible.
“Oakland deserves better, and we’re committed to working alongside partners like PENCOM who share our vision for a healthier, safer, and more beautiful city,” said Vincent Ray Williams, founder of Urban Compassion Project. “This wasn’t just a cleanup—it was an emergency response for our community.”
The effort was further bolstered by community partners including Cassin Co., which provided heavy equipment and covered tire expenses. Together, the coalition turned a dangerous crisis into a story of resilience, partnership, and community pride.
Looking ahead, Urban Compassion Project is collaborating with partners to ensure the corridor remains clean and to explore transformative projects, such as developing an urban garden in the space to prevent future dumping.
“At PENCOM, our community and neighbors are important to who we are.” Said company founder, Bill Gardiner. “We are committed to supporting initiatives that make a tangible difference in people’s lives. Partnering with Urban Compassion Project reflects our belief that companies have a responsibility to stand with their communities in times of need.”
Urban Compassion Project continues to rely on donations, volunteers, and community awareness to sustain its mission of restoring Oakland’s public spaces. PENCOM encourages others to join in supporting this important work.
